Hi! My name is Josh and I am looking to become more involved in data science projects that are mission-driven and have a humanitarian focus. I recently left my job as a Data Scientist at a start-up, where I gained experience building scalable models and algorithms for work related to time-series forecasting, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis. Before this role, I was in academia studying the outer solar system planets, where I combined multi-wavelength observations, statistical methods (Bayesian & MCMC techniques), and physical / numeric modeling in Python to retrieve the chemical, wind, and thermal structure of these planets' atmospheres. In my spare time, I love drawing, baking, tabletop roleplaying, and building and solving crossword puzzles. Any project that allows me to flex the creative energy I desire from my hobbies is appealing to me.
I am interested in projects centered on education, public health, and / or climate change. These domains have either been a large part of my life in other areas of work (I have been a teacher and mentor for several years), or the focus of my pet projects. For example, I have built an end-to-end pipeline which uses tree-based classifiers to predict the onset of hypoglycemia using my personal glucose data. I also built an app that forecasts bad air quality by location using EPA geospatial data.
As I explore new work opportunities, I hope to use this volunteer experience to meet other, mission-driven people, keep my analytic skills fresh, and expand my skill set, all while giving back in some way. Please reach out if you think I am a good fit for your project!
