Hello! My name is Rebecca, but most people call me Becca. Currently, I am the program administrator of an educational non-profit based in New York City that provides free math tutoring for underserved middle school students. Building off my 4 years of coding experience, I am a freelance data analyst, writer, and researcher. My most recent project was for a book proposal about Black women in the US over the last 100 years, for which I pulled Census Bureau data, and analyzed the author's desired variables.
My passion for data science started in my senior year of Princeton as I was working on my senior Sociology thesis on the #MeToo movement from 2017 to 2018. I was inspired by the existing work in the field of computational social science to think more critically about how research is done, how researchers communicate with their subjects and the role that technology plays in our lives. After graduating in June 2018, I completed a Fulbright fellowship as an English teacher in South Korea. Following, I completed a 4-month immersive data science boot camp at the Flatiron School and began work at my non-profit.
Since graduating from college, I have been so motivated to be a contributing member of a wider community and to keep learning, always. Recently I have been reading essay collections, but I also have a love of novels and science fiction. With regard to this volunteer opportunity, I would love to work on projects in the education and health industries. I hope to become a teacher in the next few years to help to bridge the opportunity gap in our existing educational system. I have personal experience with the need for patients to get the appropriate help and responses from health professionals. In terms of data science, I would love the opportunity to create compelling data visualizations and analysis to help tell and share stories with people of different levels of comfort with technical fields.
