I am a rising senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School (EHRS) in Greenbelt, MD. The Science and Technology Program at ERHS has offered me an extraordinary opportunity to build a solid foundation in the STEM arena. I have taken a wide range of math and advanced science courses, resulting in a keen interest in computer engineering and computer science. As a senior member of my school's GIT club, I have also reinforced my engineering design and foundational programming skills.

A strong work ethic has earned me a 4.0 GPA in my educational career to date. Unfortunately, the sudden disruption to institutionalized learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic has culminated in a very challenging summer. My organizational skills have however helped me during these challenging times. I have used most of my spare time designing a website to memorialize African American lives lost to the coronavirus. My site contains useful data, health, wellness, and prevention resources I also currently spend time researching colleges and writing essays for my college application. I encountered these volunteer opportunities while researching George Washington University's School of Engineering.

The coronavirus has made me think more seriously about the impact and devastation of pandemics. I find the magnitude of the loss of lives and disruption of normalcy astounding. As a budding engineer who is looking to contribute to those impacted by the virus, I was instantly drawn to the project on the Rapidly Deployable Breast Pump Ventilator to Combat Coronavirus. I will be completing an engineering design research project in my senior year and I believe that this project will be the perfect match for my interests and current goals. Working with mentors to design modifications on breast pumps and assembly parts to create functioning ventilator units for COVID patients will not only be rewarding, but it will also provide me with an opportunity to learn, grow, and save lives.
