Health In Harmony conducted a baseline census survey in November of 2019 in the communities around Monombo National Park. Questions were asked about the health status of communities, their use of the forest, and their economic well-being. We contracted a Malagasi data company to do the survey which included an analysis. However, the data has been presented only in long tables which is not easy to visualize and difficult to present to our donors. Beautiful visualization and some additional analyses would be amazing.
Inspire interest in the important work of Health In Harmony. Facilitate a deeper understanding of village characteristics for donors, Health In Harmony staff, and external audiences.
Two to three volunteers collaborating to develop an R Shiny app. Communicating with Health in Harmony as needed.
Internal data for the analysis NDA must be signed before data can be shared* [1] Madagascar Baseline Survey Data - Shareable in tabular format - Includes 1321 households, across 30 villages 65 survey questions
[2] A map of the survey area will be provided with clear village locations. The map will not be in shapefile format. Villages have been stratified into three parcels (parcel I, parcel II, & contiguous forest)

Between November and December 2019, a survey was carried out at the Manombo Special Reserve, Madagascar, conducted by an organization that also supports the collection of national statistics. The survey includes health, livelihood, and conservation-related questions.
Basic statistics of survey results have been calculated and summarized in an eighteen-page report. While the survey results are reliable, there have been no substantive efforts to visualize them. The project is to create an R Shiny app to visualize the results in an easily shareable and easily understandable format. The app should also communicate the story of Health In Harmony - their mission and impact. The final app should be BEAUTIFUL. It is meant to engage and compel, not just inform.
If possible, public data on Madagascar public health should be incorporated into the dashboard in a way that would enable comparison between village and national level statistics.
While there is no single metric to optimize in this project, there are several indications of project success: [-] Visualizations are understandable to the Health in Harmony teams and can be incorporated into existing decision-making processes. [-] Pilot experiments with donor audiences suggest that messages including visualizations lead to higher probability of donation. [-] Is the R Shiny app beautiful?
The sooner this project is completed the better. Latest by March 2021.
The app will immediately go into grant applications, grant reports, and will be used to seek further donors. The Health in Harmony team in Madagascar will also use the data to refine the overarching solutions that the communities asked for. For example, knowing the baseline use of birth control and which methodologies are preferred will help our midwives make sure the most desired options are available.
