Varitra Foundation is looking to engage volunteers in meaningful activities to empower rural children. It is two way learning journey both for the volunteers and for the children. The focus of the volunteering will be on teaching English, storytelling, gender equality-based sessions, etc. This will be based on the skill set of volunteers and on need of the organisation. Volunteer can choose the project based on their interest areas also. The volunteer program is like rural immersion program where volunteer will be getting to learn, experience local culture, food, lifestyle, etc. Volunters can also get engaged in activities such as farming, tailoring, local products making, etc.
Volunteers will be provided accommodation facilities to make their stay comfortable. They will be provided support for local travel also.
Varitra works in rural interior villages which lacks on socio-economic indicators. Children of these villages are first generation higher education learners. Through libraries we interact with school going children so that our children are gender sensitive and aware about issues such as masculinity, bulling, eve teasing, violence, etc. Library sessions take place once a week for one particular class. We also have girl power centres in these communities where we empower and enable young girls and women through skill building. Girl power centres have been designed and managed by these girls and women only. Varitra team takes training sessions/workshops at girl power centres to create a team of young dynamic changemakers who work in their communities on gender equality. Varitra Foundation organises gender awareness events in villages and at district levels to spread awareness among masses through making usage of theatre, small films, music and photo exhibition. These events gather women from rural areas in large numbers and they celebrate their creations, togetherness, successes to feel more empowered and motivated.
